Auto flammability
Administrative data
- Endpoint:
- auto-flammability
- Type of information:
- migrated information: read-across based on grouping of substances (category approach)
- Adequacy of study:
- weight of evidence
- Study period:
- 2010
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: a conservative approach was adopted to read across autoflammability from 1-bromopropane, the result is considered reliable.

Any other information on results incl. tables
Read across of flammability properties of halogen propanes
substance name | CAS No. | boiling point/°C | Flash point / °C | Autoignition temp /°C | lower explosion limit/g/m³ |
1-chloropropane | 540-54-5 | 47 | -18 | 520 | 70 |
2-chloropropane | 75-29-6 | 35 | -32 | 590 | 90 |
1-bromopropane | 106-94-5 | 71 | -10 | 490 | 170 |
2-bromopropane | 75-26-3 | 59 | -20 | 165
From the table it can be seen that boiling point and flash point of bromopropanes behave like the corresponding chloropropanes. A similar relationship can be expected from the autoignition temperatures. Due to the uncertainty of the autoignition process an exact figure cannot be given, however, a value of more than 490°C can be approximated as best guess for this endpoint.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- An autoignition temperature for 2-bromopropane of >490°C has been determined from read across with 1-bromopropane, for which reliable experimental results are reported.
The endpoint is not critical for the classification of explosion proof installations. According to ATEX explosion hazard class IIA can be assumed for the substance.
