Description of key information

A GLP-conform study according to OECD 201 guideline and EC Method C.3 on the toxicity of MgCl2.6H2O to the green alga Scenedesmus subspicatus showed no statistically significant inhibitory effect on the growth rate, cell number and biomass up to the largest nominal dose of 100 mg MgCl2.6H2O/L, corresponding to 12 mg Mg/L (background concentration of the test medium was 6 mg Mg/L; Dengler, 2010a).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
12 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
12 mg/L

Additional information

No data were identified for the acute toxicity of Mg metal to aquatic algae. A GLP-conform study according to OECD 201 guideline and EC Method C.3 on the toxicity of MgCl2.6H2O to the green alga Scenedesmus subspicatus showed no statistically significant inhibitory effect on the growth rate, cell number and biomass up to the largest nominal dose of 100 mg MgCl2.6H2O/L, corresponding to 12 mg Mg/L (Dengler, 2010a). No reliable data are available for the toxicity of magnesium substances to marine algae.
