Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One reliable (Klimisch 2) chronic toxicity tests with Mg salts was identified. A 21-d EC16 value of 82 mg Mg/L (based on added Mg dose) was observed for the effect of MgCl2.6H2O on reproduction of Daphnia magna (Biesinger and Christensen, 1972). Background concentration of the test medium was approximately 3 mg Mg/L, which corresponds to a soft water medium. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was derived by dividing the EC16 value by a factor of two, resulting in a NOEC of 41 mg Mg/L.

Additional information

No data were identified for the long-term toxicity of Mg metal to aquatic invertebrates. One reliable (Klimisch 2) chronic toxicity tests with Mg salts was identified, reporting a 21-day EC16 value of 82 mg Mg/L (based on added Mg dose) for the effect of MgCl2.6H2O on reproduction of Daphnia magna (Biesinger and Christensen, 1972). No reliable data are available for the long-term toxicity of magnesium substances to marine invertebrates.
