Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The lowest 96-h LC50 for freshwater fish was observed for the acute effect of MgCl2 on fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) in moderately hard reconstituted water (Mount et al., 1997; Mount and Gulley, 1992). For marine water, the lowest acute LC50 of 2800 mg Mg/L was observed in a 48-h test on the effect of MgCl2 on mortality of Menidia beryllina (Pillard et al., 2000).

Additional information

No data were identified for the acute toxicity of Mg metal to fish. Reliable studies (all Klimisch 2) are available for the acute toxicity of MgCl2and MgSO4to one freshwater fish (Pimephales promelas) and the acute toxicity of MgCl2to two marine fish species (Cyprinodon variegatesandMenidia beryllina). For the freshwater environment the acute 96h-LC50 values range between 541 and 1595 mg Mg/L. The reliable freshwater toxicity data do not differ significantly between MgCl2and MgSO4. The reported LC50 values for marine species were higher than for freshwater species, with 48-h LC50 values of 2800 and 4740 mg Mg/L forMenidia beryllinaandCyprinodon variegates, respectively (Pillard et al., 2000). All concentrations were reported based on added Mg doses.
