Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Monitoring data
Administrative data
- Endpoint:
- monitoring data
- Type of information:
- migrated information: read-across based on grouping of substances (category approach)
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 2007-2009
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: see 'Remark'
- Remarks:
- Member states reported data on monitored concentrations to the EU Commission that were supposed to be relevant for general water quality. However, analysis has demonstrated that the data were not always answering that definition. Still, this data review was at EU scale was unique and is therefore reported.

Materials and methods
Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- no guideline followed
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Member states were asked by the EU Commission to report monitored data on substances in water, that were to be relevant for assessing the general quality of the waters. Data were processed by the International Office of Water and INERIS.
- GLP compliance:
- not specified
- Type of measurement:
- other: data reflect general water quality
- Media:
- surface water
Test material
- Reference substance name:
- Cadmium
- EC Number:
- 231-152-8
- EC Name:
- Cadmium
- Cas Number:
- 7440-43-9
- Molecular formula:
- Cd
- IUPAC Name:
- cadmium
- Details on test material:
- Data were reported for "cadmium". So, no distinction was made between different sources/forms of cadmium resulting in the final measured concentration.
Constituent 1
Study design
- Details on sampling:
- data were compiled for 3915 sampling stations throughout the EU, on a total of 69539 analyses. Data are from the period 2000-2008.
Results and discussion
Concentration
- Country:
- other: EU
- Location:
- 90P for the EU as a whole
- Substance or metabolite:
- substance
- Conc.:
- 0.5 µg/L
- Remarks on result:
- other: total cadmium concentration, 3915 stations
- Details on results:
- "whole water" (= total) cadmium concentrations are reported from the period 2000-2008. Country 90P values were not disclosed. In some countries (Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, sampling points are influenced by industrial point source emissions, and/or emissions from historical mining, and/or local metal-enriched geology.
Analysis on the dissolved dataset has demonstrated that the data reported by Spain, that make out the majority of the dissolved database, were technically unreliable. Therefore the EU 90P for the dissolved concentrations is not reliable and cannot be used.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- Given the scale and recent date of the study, the results are considered relevant for assessing current water quallity. It has to be noted that for several countries, the dataset contains data from sampling sites, specially chosed to monitor emissions from industrial point sources. As such, the data do not always reflect general water quality, but rather the local situation.
- Executive summary:
The overall EU 90P value for total cadmium concentrations in water, based on 3915 sampling stations, is 0.5 µg Cd/l.
Individual country data were not disclosed.
