Description of key information

Appearance / physical state / colour:

The appearance of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate was observed as white to almost white crystalline powder organic compound.

Melting point/ Freezing point:

The Mean melting temperature range of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was found be 271.6 - 275.1°C at 972.1hPa.

Boiling point:

The boiling point of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was inferred to be greater than 300°C at 971.2 hPa.

Density:

The mean pour density and tapped density of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was found to be 0.5984 g/cm³ and 0.6899 g/cm³ at 20°C and 970.0 hPa. .

Particle size distribution (Granulometry):

The particle size distribution of test item Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0)  was found to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron.

Vapour pressure:

The estimated vapour pressure of the substance Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate at 25 deg C was 2.15E-19 Pa (1.61E-21 mm Hg).

Partition coefficient:

Based on the prediction done by ACD labs, the surface tension for chemical Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate was predicted to be 47.1 ± 3.0 dyne/cm

Flash point:

The flash point of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate(CAS No. 55-55-0) was 257°C at 971.2hPa.

Flammability:

Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.

Other supporting data from handbooks and authoritative databases, also supported the selected key study and observed the appearance of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate as offwhite to white colored, odourless solid crystalline organic compound.

Melting point/ Freezing point:

The melting point determination of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean melting temperature range was found to be 271.6-275.1°C at 972.1hPa.

Other supporting studies from handbooks authoritative databases, also supported the selected key study and exhibited the melting point of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate at 260 °C (decomp), 259 °C and 250-260 °C respectively.

Boiling point:

The boiling point determination of Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. the test item does not show string of bubbles upto 300 °C, inferring boiling point to be greater than 300°C at 971.2 hPa.

Density:

The density of test item Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the Test methods: Pour density and tapped density of powders” recommended in The International Pharmacopoeia, Fourth

Edition, 2014 using bulk density apparatus The mean pour density and tapped density of test item was found to be 0.5984 g/cm³ and 0.6899 g/cm³ at 20°C and 970.0 hPa.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry):

The particle size distribution of test item Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate (CAS No. 55-55-0) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was found to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron.

Vapour pressure:

Modified Grain method (Mean of Antoine and Modified Grain methods) was used to estimate the vapour pressure of the substance Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate using MPBPVP v1.43 of EPI SUITE.

The estimated vapour pressure of the substance Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate at 25 deg C was 2.15E-19 Pa (1.61E-21 mm Hg).

On the basis of obtained values the compound Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate was considered to be very soluble in water.

Other supporting data from authoritative database Gestis, also supported the selected key study and exhibited the pH of 50 g/l concentration of substance Bis(4-hydroxy-N-methylanilinium) sulphate as 3.5 - 4.5 at 20 °C, closer to the selected key value.
