Description of key information

The water solubility of an aqueous solution of benzylamine was determined according to the pre-test method as described in OECD guideline 105. The pre-test was extended for which glass vials were filled with benzylamine and water in 5% v/v increments and samples were examined for phase separation both after shaking at 23°C and at 20°C. Results revealed that the test item was fully miscible with water both at 23°C and at 20°C in 5% v/v increments from 5 %v/v to 95 %v/v.
In MITI, 1992, it is stated that benzylamine is soulbe in water with >100 mg/L.
The water solubility of benzylamine was estimated from Log Kow (1.09) using Epiwin at 132.8 g/L (25°C).
Furthermore, it is stated in Ullmann's Encyclopedia (2006) and in the CRC Handbook (2009) that benzylamine is miscible with water.

Additional information

A pre-test on the water solubility of benzylamine, conducted according to OECD 105, revealed an approximate solubility of benzylamie of about 1000 g/L. In an extended pre-test on the water solubility of benzylamine, the test item was fully miscible with water both at 23°C and at 20°C in 5% v/v increments from 5 %v/v to 95 %v/v. This result is substantiated by the published data of MITI, 1992, where the water solubility of benzylamine is given with >100 mg/L. In addition, it is stated in handbooks (Ullmann, 2006; CRC handbook, 2009) that benzylamine is miscible with water and a calculation using Epiwin revealed a water solubility of 132.8 g/L. Thus, benzylamine is highly soluble in water.
