Iron

No effects of ferric sulfate on mortality of Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were observed at a dose of 2250 mg Fe/kg in a 2 week duration test in which the substance was administered via oral capsules (Grimes & Jaber 1986). This information was obtained from the US EPA ECOTOX Ecotoxicology Database. The study is unpublished and could not be reviewed further. It was therefore assigned Reliability 4. Studies reported in the database have however been subject to expert review. No significant effects on growth or survival in Bantam chickens (Gallus domesticus) were detected following two weeks dietary exposure to 1000 ppm (i.e. mg/kg) of ferrous sulfate (as Fe) in a study assigned reliability 2 (Blalock & Hill 1988).
