Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The submission item is considered to exhibit pitting corrosion and is to be classified as corrosive as it is comparable to a 1.3 wt% HCl solution.

Additional information

The submission item consists on solutions of metal chlorides in water with an excess of dissolved hydrogen chloride which is reactive against certain metals. Therefore a read across is made from Hydrochloric acid (CAS 7647-01-0). On the basis of its composition the submission item is considered comparable to a 1.3 % HCl solution. The read across bases on a study (Maass 2010) according to the United Nations Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods, 2003 New York and Geneva, which was conducted under non-GLP conditions and is considered reliable (Klimisch 2) and conclusive for assessment and classification and labelling.

Maass (2010) found aqueous solutions of >0.1 wt% HCl exceeding the corrosion threshold rate of 6.25 mm/year when exposed to Aluminium 7075. The aluminium showed pitting corrosion in the Vapour/Liquid and Vapour phase when exposed to >1 wt% HCl.

According to the criteria in the UN Standard mentioned above aqueous solutions of HCl containing ≥ 0.1 wt% HCl should be classified as corrosive.

In conclusion the submission item is considered to exhibit pitting corrosion and is to be classified as corrosive as it is comparable to a 1.3 wt% HCl solution.
