The ready biodegradation was tested in two ways.

HHCB was tested in a modified Sturm test for ready biodegradation (OECD 301B). The substance did not show significant CO2 evolution. HHCB was not inhibiting the degradation of the reference substance under the conditions of the modified Sturm test (Jenkins 1991).

The ready biodegradability of HHCB was assessed in the sealed vessel headspace with TIC analysis for CO2-evolution and an adapted inoculum. HHCB was tested as one of the commercially available qualities containing isopropyl myristate which, as a dispersant, should promote the bioavailability of the poorly water soluble HHCB. The inoculum was pre-exposed to HHCB in a SCAS test. The CO2-evolution in the test was attributed to the biodegradation of isopropylmyristate. The test showed the absence of mineralisation under the stringent conditions of the tests for ready biodegradability (King 1994).
