Literature data available describe the substance as explosive if it is in dry form:

- Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. May explosively decompose on shock, friction, or concussion (International Program on Chemical Safety, 1996).

- Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may result in the spontaneous decomposition and heating with a resultant explosion. /Dinitrophenol solutions/ (Association of American Railroads, 2005)

- Forms explosive salts with alkalis and ammonia (Lewis, R.J. , 2004)

The compound is used in the form of a water paste to suppress its explosive properties.

Dinitrophenol, wetted, with not less than 15% water, by mass is classified with UN number 1320, class 4.1 classification code DT (solid desensitized explosive) according to ADR European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). -

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is marketed with a concentration of water > 15% wt, which suppresses its explosive properties and classification for explosive properties does not apply under Regulation 1272/2008
