Description of key information
DGHE is with high probability acutely not harmful to alga.
Based on read-across to data available for the close structural analogue 2-(hexyloxy)ethanol, the 72 -h ErC50 and ErC10 values are determined at 258 mg/L and 31.7 mg/L, respectively in freshwater algae (D. subspicatus).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
No studies on DGHE are available with alga. A read-across to CAS 112 -25 -4 and CAS 112-34 -5 was performed (see read-across justification in chapter 13). As additional supporting information a QSAR calculation (ECOSAR) was performed.
Also, the toxicity of Ethanol, 2-(hexyloxy)- (CAS 112 -25 -4) towards freshwater algae was determined in a study according to DIN 38412, part L9. In this study, exponentially growing freshwater alga (Desmodesmus subspicatus) were exposed to nominal test substance concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 250 mg/L for 96 hours under static conditions. The test was performed in 4 replicates per test concentration. At the start of the test and after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours exposure duration, the cell concentrations were determined and growth rates at the different tested concentrations calculated. The 72-h ErC50 and ErC10 values are reported to be 198.3 mg/L and 23.4 mg/L, respectively. When correction for difference in molecular weight between the source chemical and target chemical, the 72 -h ErC50 and ErC10- values are
The limited toxicity towards freshwater algae is supported by a study with Ethanol, 2 -(2 -butoxyethoxy)- (CAS 112-34-5) which was performed according to OECD TG 201 and in compliance with GLP criteria. In this study, exponentially growing freshwater alga (Desmodesmus subspicatus) were exposed in a Limit test to a substance concentration of 100 mg/L under static conditions. The test was performed in 6 replicates per test concentration. The 96-h EC50 and NOEC values for growth rate and biomass corrected for molecular weight were determined at 100 mg/L and ≥100 mg/L, respectively (nominal). As no effect were seen up to the highest concentration tested, and in addition the information is supporting, no correction for molecular weight diference was performed.
Assessment of algae toxicity is further supported by QSAR prediction for CAS 112 -59 -4 resulting in an 96 -h EC50 value of 111.9 mg/L.
