Description of key information

Based on the absence of effects in any of the toxicity studies and on the very poor solubility in water and octanol, Pigment Red 177 is predicted to be not taken up by the body.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Bioaccumulation potential:
no bioaccumulation potential

Additional information

Pigment Red 177 is of very low solubility in both water and octanol. Measured values are each 25 microgramms per liter, resulting in a calculated n-octanol/water partition coefficient of 0. This makes any transport process very difficult and accordingly, no indication of systemic availability was observed in the toxicity studies with oral and dermal exposure routes. Oral dosing results in red discoloration of the feces which indicates gastrointestinal passage. Discolouration of urine or body tissues was not observed.
