Key value for chemical safety assessment

Genetic toxicity in vitro

Description of key information

Zirconium salts in nano and non-nano form have been extensively evaluated for use in medical devices and food contact. Although some studies note minor adverse effects on certain cell systems, this may be interpreted as toxic effects to cell division and not necessarily mutagenicity.

Since there is considered to be dissociation in solution, it is consodered valid to assess the zirconium ion.

Nitrates are not considered mutagenic and are found natually in food and water.
