Flammability of solids
The test item is not highly flammable. Burning time > 45 s and burning rate < 2.2 mm/s, thus the classification criteria for flammable solids are not met.
Flammability in contact with water
The substance does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it does not react with water (cf. section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).
Pyrophoric properties
This substance does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (circa 20 °C). m-Toluic acid is present in a stable oxidation state. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that the substance does not ignite in contact with air (cf. section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).
Justification for classification or non-classification
m-Toluic acid is not "highly flammable" according to the criteria of the regulation (EC) 440/2008, A.10 "Flammability (solids)", has no pyrophoric properties and does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable.
According to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) of the United Nations, m-toluic acid does not have to be classified as flammable. According to the criteria of regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and its subsequent adaptations, m toluic-acid does not have to be classified and has no obligatory labelling requirement for flammability.
