Additional information

A large number of aquatic ecotoxicity studies have been conducted with benzene. Following the approach in the EU RAR for benzene (2008) tests conducted in flow-through systems with analytical confirmation of the exposure concentration have been preferentially selected as key studies because of the high volatility of benzene.

The PBT assessment toxicity screening criteria are that an acute EC50 or LC50 <0.1mg/L is considered to be T, and that an EC50 or LC50 <0.01mg/L indicates that the substance is definitely T. Experimental acute and chronic ecotoxicity data are available for benzene. The acute effect concentrations are greater than the screening criteria and the chronic values are greater than the toxicity criteria stipulated in Annex XIII. Therefore, benzene is not considered to be T.
