Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Although this endpoint can be waived experimental data are available, so are reported here. The reported results show that benzene has a low to moderate bioaccumulation potential when considering data for individual organs. The highest available BCF for whole fish were <10 for Leuciscus idus measured by Freitag et al. (1985) and 11 for Clupea harengus measured by Eldridge and Echeverria (1978). These values are very similar to the BCF of 13 calculated based on the measured log Kow of 2.13 using the equation recommended in the Technical Guidance Document (Veith et al., 1979).

The measured log Kow of 2.13 indicates that benzene does not exceed the screening criteria for bioaccumulation stipulated in ECHA’s Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment - Part C: PBT Assessment (2008c). Therefore, benzene is not considered to be bioaccumulative (B) or very bioaccumulative (vB).
