Description of key information

The lowest value of 211 mg barium/kg soil dw, which was determined for the collembole Folsomia candida, was put forward for the derivation of a terrestrial PNEC. 211 mg Ba/kg soil dw refers to 320 mg BaCl2/kg soil dw.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for soil dwelling arthropods:
320 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

Kuperman et al (2006) reported a reliable NOEC-value for barium (added as barium nitrate) for the arthropod F. candida. The derived no-effect values were based on ecological relevant endpoints (mortality and reproduction). Reproduction was the most sensitive endpoint, and the lowest NOEC-value was 211 mg Ba/kg soil dw.
