Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Description of key information

The substance is biodegradable in a wastewater treatment plant after adaptation.
No data are available on simulation testing in water and sediment. However, the substance is readily biodagradable according to OECD criteria.

Simulation testing of the substance in water and sediment can be waived under REACH as the studies are scientifically not necessary.


According to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, Annex IX, Section 9.2.1.2, column 2, a simulation study on ultimate degradation in surface water does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. The substance is readily biodegradable (OECD 301E, BASF AG, 1990, report no. 1901337; see IUCLID Ch. 5.2.1). Therefore, no biodegradation studies in surface water will be provided.


According to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, Annex IX, Section 9.2.1.4, Column 2, sediment simulation testing does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. The substance is readily biodegradable (OECD 301E, BASF AG, 1990, report no. 1901337; see IUCLID Ch. 5.2.1). Therefore, no sediment simulation study will be provided.


Strotmann et al. (1993) investigated the degradability of morpholine in a test similar to OECD TG 303A. Morpholine was proven to be degraded in this aerobic sewage simulation test. After an adaptation phase of 10-12 d, the degradation ranged within 80-94 % during the operation period of 27 d.
