Description of key information

No toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L) for Daphnia magna based on read across (OECD 202, part II, limit test)

As no valid study is available for assessing the acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, tri-C9-11-alkyl esters (CAS No. 94279-36-4), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related category member 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218-76-1) was conducted. The read across is justified due to a) the structural similarity of the category members and b) similar physico-chemical properties resulting in a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13.

The study with 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218-76-1) was performed under semi-static conditions according to GLP and OECD guideline 202, part II using Daphnia magna as test organism (Scholz, 1997). In this limit test the water-accommodated-fraction (WAF) of a 1 g/L stock solution was tested. The mean measured test concentration was 4.5 mg/L. Since no effects were observed, on the basis of the mean measured test concentration the NOEC (21 d) value for reproduction and survival of the parent animals is determined to be ≥ 4.5 mg/L (measured, WAF), which corresponds to the highest water solubility of the substance under test conditions.

Thus, based on the above mentioned results, and due to the structural similarities and a consistent ecotoxicological/environmental fate profile of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary in IUCLID chapter 6.1, it can be concluded that no chronic toxicity of 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, tri-C9-11-alkyl esters (CAS No CAS No. 94279-36-4) to aquatic invertebrates is expected.
