Description of key information

No toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L) for Scenedesmus subspicatus based on read across (EU method C.3, limit test)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

As no valid study is available for assessing the acute toxicity to algae of 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, tri-C9-11-alkyl esters (CAS No. 94279-36-4), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related category member 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218-76-1) was conducted. The read across is justified due to a) the structural similarity of the category members and b) similar physico-chemical properties resulting in a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13.

The study with 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218-76-1) was performed under static conditions according to GLP and EU method C.3 using Scenedesmus subspicatus as test organism (Scholz, 1994). The algae were exposed to six concentrations ranging from 0.24 to 3.5 mg/L, which were prepared on the basis of a water-accommodated-fraction (WAF) of a 1 g/L stock solution. Based on the lack of effects on algal growth rate the EC50 (72 h) is determined to be > 3.5 mg/L and the NOEC (72 h) is determined to be ≥ 3.5 mg/L on the basis of the DOC content, which corresponds to the highest water solubility of the substance under test conditions.

Thus, based on the above mentioned results, and due to the structural similarities and a consistent ecotoxicological/environmental fate profile of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary in IUCLID chapter 6.1, it can be concluded that no toxicity of 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, tri-C9-11-alkyl esters (CAS No CAS No. 94279-36-4) to aquatic algae is expected.
