Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

In two ready biodegradation tests conducted according to EU method C.4-C and GLP (1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters; CAS No. 90218-76-1), it is demonstrated that biodegradation of the PFAE aromatics category members continues beyond the 28 day test period, which resulted in a biodegradation above 70% after a test period of 43 days and 48 days, respectively.

As the screening criteria for persistency listed in table R.11-2 of the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment: Chapter R.11: PBT assessment” (ECHA, 2017) are passed under the strict conditions of enhanced ready biodegradation tests, it can be concluded that the test substance is not persistent in the environment and simulation testing on ultimate degradation in surface water and sediment is not required. As stated in ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b, a simulation test would provide little additional data as rapid mineralisation in the environment is already assumed (ECHA, 2017).
