Description of key information

The Caspers et al (1986) and Anai (2007) studies provide the key 96hLC50 values of 393 mg/L and 0.414 mg/L  for Danio rerio (freshwater fish) and Pagrus major (marine water fish), respectively. The LC50 reported in the marine species (Pagrus major) is more than 1000 lower than the lowest observed in freshwater species. This particular sensitivity to TDA might be related to the species more than to specific sensitivity to marine biota.

Additional information

Available data on toxicity to fish

Fourteen bibliographic references reported experimental results for this endpoint with following reliability: one study with reliability (1), five studies with reliability (2), four studies with reliability (3), four studies with reliability (4). Those experimental results were obtained by tests performed according to or similar to OECD guideline 203 (Fish, Acute Toxicity Test), or not. Ecotoxicity values (96h-LC50) are reported for freshwater species as well as for saltwater species. Toxicity of TDA was investigated in five fish species.

Acute Toxicity on Freshwater Fish

Three studies of reliability (2) and one study of reliability (4) are available on fresh water species. Among the studies with reliability (2), one study has been performed according to OECD guideline 203 on Danio rerio, two according to accepted scientific procedure.

Experimental results from the studies of reliability (2):

Danio rerio: 96h-LC50=393 mg/L (static conditions, nominal concentration of TDA 80/20)

Pimephales promelas: 96h-LC50=1420 mg/L (flow-through, measured concentration of 2,4 -TDA)

Oryzias latipes: 96h-LC50=912 mg/L (flow-through, measured concentration of 2,4 -TDA)

Under the experimental conditions of the studies, both TDA 80/20 and 2,4 -TDA were not harmfull to freshwater fish according to EC criterion (LC50 > 100 mg/L).

Acute Toxicity on Saltwater Fish

One study of reliability (1), two studies of reliability (2), four studies of reliability (3), three studies of reliability (4) are available on saltwater species. Experimental results from the study with reliability (1):

Pagrus major: 96h-LC50 =0.414 mg/L (flow-through, measured concentration of 2,4 -TDA).

Conclusion

-among the five species, Pagrus major was the most sensitive to TDA. The 96h-LC50 values from the study with reliability (1) being more than a factor of 1000 lower than the 96h-LC50 values for other fish species.

-both TDA 80/20 and 2,4 -TDA were not harmfull to freshwater fish according to EC criterion (LC50 > 100 mg/L).
