Short term toxicity to fish

Cardanol has very low water solubility of 1.4 mg/L. The experimental study of acute fish toxicity indicates the LC50 to range between > 0.08 to < 0.2 mg/L. Thus, the LC50 value for chemical safety assessment was considered to be 0.085 mg/L.

Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Weight of evidence apperoach was used for estimation the short term toxicity of cardanol to aquatic invertebrates. Cardanol had an LC50 of 1.59 mg/L and 0.42 mg/L after 24 and 48 hr exposures respectively as pr the experimental results.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

After 72 hours of exposure to Cardanol (CAS No. 37330-39-5) to various nominal test concentration, the experimental EC50 calculated from both, equation and graphically through probit analysis was found to be 1.41 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms

The IGC50 value of Cardanol in microbes (Tetrahymena pyriformis) for 48hr was found to be 36.58 mg/l.
