An OECD 216 GLP study was conducted on the effect of heptanoic acid on nitrification in soil. Heptanoic acid did not inhibit nitrification up to 300 mg/kg soil dw. NOEC is 300 mg/kg soil dw.
Inhibitory effect of n-heptanoic acid on nitrification in soil was
investigated according to OECD 216 guideline. Graded concentrations of
heptanoic acid (0 ; 3 ; 10 ; 30 ; 100 ; 320 ; 1000 mg/kg soil dw) were
tested on a soil sampled in the wild and enriched with a known amount of Medicago
sativa (dry lucerne). N-NO3 concentrations in soils were
analytically quantified at the start of the experiment and 28 days after
incubation. No inhibitory effect was observed on nitrification up to 300
mg/kg soil dw. Inhibition occurred at 1000 mg/kg soil dw. NOEC is 300
mg/kg soil dw.
