Description of key information

Read-across approach (EC Number: 422-320-3); two soil macroorganism endpoints were located: 
- Acute study, OECD Guideline 207, GLP, key study, validity 1, Eisenia foetida: 14d-LC50 > 1000 mg/kg soil dw (based on nominal concentration), NOEC >= 1000 mg/kg soil dw (based on nominal concentration). No effects at the highest concentration tested.
- Chronic study, OECD Guideline 222, GLP, key study, validity 2, Eisenia foetida: 56d-LOEC > 544 mg/kg soil dw (based on initial measured concentration), 56d-NOEC >= 544 mg/kg soil dw (based on initial measured concentration). No effects at the highest concentration tested.

Additional information

Two key studies are available to assess the toxicity of the substance to soil macroorganisms, using ta read-across substance (EC Number: 422 -320 -3). This supporting substance is considered adequate for read-across purposes (see IUCLID section 13 for justification).

The first key study is an acute study, performed according to the OECD Guideline 207 with GLP statement, on the earthworm Eisenia foetida in an artificial soil. Following a preliminary range-finding test, 60 earthworms (6 replicates of 10 worms) were exposed to a single nominal concentration of 1000 mg/kg dw of soil for a period of 14 days. The number of mortalities were determined after 7 and 14 days exposure. The 14 -d LC50 for the test material to earthworms based on nominal test concentrations was greater than 1000 mg/kg dw. The NOEC was >= 1000 mg/kg dw.

The second key study is a chronic study, performed according to the OECD Guideline 222 with GLP statement, on the earthworm, Eisenia foetida, in an artificial soil. 40 adult earthworms (4 replicates of 10 worms) were exposed to nominal concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg dw of soil for a period of 28 days (4 weeks). Mortality and growth effects (and other sub-lethal effects) was determined after 28 days (4 weeks) of exposure. The adult earthworms were then removed from the soil and effects on reproduction were assessed after a further 28 days (4 weeks). The measured concentration of the test item in the pooled soil sample (1000 mg test item/kg soil dry weight) at test start was 54.4% indicating a distinct loss of the test item caused by the application procedure. Therefore, the results are based on the initial measured concentrations of the test item. The NOEC based on mortality, growth and earthworm reproduction based on initial measured test concentrations was >= 544 mg/kg soil dry weight. The LOEC was greater than 544 mg/kg soil dry weight.
