Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish

Key study: Estimated data: The estimated 96-h LC50 for fish is 0.199 mg/l (ECOSAR v1.00a, phenols class).

Key study: Experimental results: The 96h-LC50 of BHT in Oryzias latipes was 1.1 mg/L.

Long-term toxicity to fish:

Key study: Experimental results: OECD guideline 210. The NOEC (30d) of BHT in Oryzias latipes was 0.053 mg/L and the LOEC (30d) was 0.14 mg/L

BHT did not cause adverse effects on growth performance, lipid metabolism, inflammation, anti-oxidant response, apoptosis and hepatosis induced by oxidative stress in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) after 70 dietary exposure up to 1500 mg/kg (23.80 mg/kg bw/day) test item.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

Experimental results: OECD guideline 202 and EU method C.2. It was considered justifiable to base the results on the geometric mean measured test concentrations in order to give a "worst case" analysis of the data. The 48 h-EC50 based on the geometric mean measured test concentrations was 0.48 mg/L and the NOEC was 0.15 mg/L.

Experimental results: OECD guideline 202, GLP. The 48hour-LC50 of BHT in Daphnia magna was 0.84 mg/L.

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Experimental results: OECD guideline 211, GLP. The 21day-NOEC of BHT in Daphnia magna was 0.069 mg/L and the 21day-EC50 was 0.096 mg/L.

Toxicity to aquatic algae

Estimated data: The estimated 96-h EC50 for green algae is 0.758 mg/l (ECOSAR v1.00a, phenols class).

Experimental results: OECD guideline 201, GLP. Based on growth rate, the 72hour-EC50 of the test subtance BHT in Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was > 0.24 mg/L and the 72hour-NOEC was 0.24 mg/L.

Experimental results: OECD guideline 201, GLP. The 72h-EC50 for BHT in Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was >7.0 mg/L and the 72h-NOEC was 1.7 mg/L based on growth rate.

Toxicity to microorganisms

Tetrahymena pyriformis. EC50 (24h)= 1.7 mg/L based on growth inhibition.

The 30min-EC50 of BHT to Photobacterium phosphoreum based on light emission is 8.98 mg/L.

The 36h-NOEC of BHT to Pseudomona fluorescens based on the number of viable cells was 50 mg/L.
