Description of key information

In a reliable study performed on freshwater algae, the substance was found not harmful to algae with a 72-hour EC50 = 598 mg a.i./L and 72-hour EC10 = 262 mg a.i./L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
598 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
262 mg/L

Additional information

The substance was tested for toxicity on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata in a study performed according to OECD Guideline 201 and in accordance with GLP.

The freshwater alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, was exposed to a geometric series of six treatment levels of2-isobutyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol ranging from 31 to 944 mg a.i./L, based on mean, measured concentrations of this substance.

Toxicity of 2-isobutyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol to P. subcapitata was assessed based on effects on growth rate and yield relative to the negative control group. The 72-hour EC50values for growth rate and yield were determined to be 598 mg a.i./L and 219 mg a.i./L, respectively. The 72 hour EC10 value for growth rate was determined to be 262 mg a.i./L.

Based on the results of this study, the test item is considered as not harmful to aquatic plants in accordance with the Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP).
