Description of key information

Not relevant; instable in water; hydrolysis products very soluble (500 g HCl/L) or insoluble (< 0.1 µg TiO2/L; ca. 1 nmol Ti(IV)/L)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the water solubility study (section 7.7) does not need to be conducted as the substance is hydrolytically unstable at ambient pH (half-life less than 12 hours). It is reactive towards water (Millennium 2007), and on reaction produces hydrochloric acid and insoluble oxides. A precipitate of insoluble titanium dioxide is produced after rapid hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride (Fisk et al 2010). The solubility of titanium dioxide is reported as < 5 µg/L. (Harvey 2004) and even < 1µg/L (Brouwers 2009).

  • Brouwers T (2009). 24h screening transformation/dissolution test of Chloride reactor discharge at a 100 mg/L loading in a standard aqueous medium at pH 6, 7 and 8. testing laboratory: ECTX consult bvba, Bergstraat 73, B3500 Hasselt/ analytical phase: Servaco nv, tramstraat 2, B8560 wevelgem. Owner company: TDMA (titanium dioxide manufacturers association). Study no. X09-01-014
