Description of key information

Bivariate size distribution from scanning electron microscopy of aerosol samples of E-glass microfibre showing fibres/mL per size category is presented. It is found in one study that the E-glass microfibre has the follwoing size information: Geometric Length (um): 3.5, mean geometric diameter (um): 0 .25, and mean specific surface area (m2/g): 3.43.
The results of a second granulometry study showed that the diameter of the E-glass microfibre is <0.9 um (in fact 97% was <0.4 um), and that the length of 97% of the E-glass microfibre is < 20 um.

Additional information

Published information is presented on the particle size distribution of E-glass microfibre. This size distribution is a pre-selection of the commercial product to obtain rat respirable fibres for these studies. The commercial product may have a different distribution depending upon application.

It is evaluated that E-glass microfibre is inhalable (i.e. particle size <100 um). Aerodynamic diameters corresponding to the fibre density, diameter and length is calculated for E-glass microfibre by the registrant and found to be below 4 um (E-glass microfibre is respirable). It is concluded that inhalation is the most appropriate exposure route.
