Based on the physico-chemical properties of thioglycolic acid and its salts (high solubility and low Vp and Log Kow), it is considered that these substances are not expected to adsorb to suspended solids, sediments or soils or are mobile in soil.

A modelling approach is usually proposed to roughly estimate the transport between environmental compartments. This approach cannot necessarily be followed for all substance classes. Ionisable substances for instance do not fit in relevancy criteria of the common models used. It is important to have information on pH-dependence. Additionally, the influence of the mineral matrix cannot be ignored. Nevertheless some physico-chemical properties can be estimated in a sufficient and realistic manner. With a very low Henry's Law constant, thioglycolic acid and its salts are expected to be essentially non-volatile from water or moist surfaces. Thioglycolic acid and its salts are not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based upon a very low vapour pressure. In conclusion, the environmental fate of thioglycolic acid and its salts are not completely characterized by experiments. However, some physico-chemical parameters allow good assumptions in terms of behaviour, especially mobility in soil and volatilization potential.
