If the heat developed either by a reaction of the substance with oxygen or by exothermic decomposition is not lost rapidly enough to the surroundings, self-heating leading to self-ignition occurs. Self-ignition therefore occurs when the rate of heat-production exceeds the rate of heat loss.

Long-term industrial experience of manufacturing and handling the substance has not demonstrated any self-ignition properties.

Furthermore, by way of extrapolation, lead metal powder has been tested according to EU-Method A.10, yielding a result of “not flammable”. It can therefore be assumed that lead metal powder is not ignitable or auto-flammable. In consequence, since basic lead sulphate represents an inorganic salt containing lead in an oxidised status (2+) and a stable anion of an inorganic acid, the substance is intrinsically less combustible than lead itself and will not undergo self-ignition. Furthermore, no exothermic decomposition was reported (DSC analysis) up to a temperature of 600 °C for basic lead sulphate. Thus, it can safely be assumed not to be ignitable or auto-flammable for basic lead sulfate.
