Description of key information

The EC50 (3 h) was determined to be 28.8 mg a.s./L in an OECD test 209 (GLP, reliability 1). The EC10 (3h) was 10.9 mg a.s./L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
28.8 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
10.9 mg/L

Additional information

Two studies are available on the toxicity to micro-organisms. The study by Kay (1959) was assigned reliability 3 because of missing data, lack of information on test material identity, composition, phys chem properties, analytics, culture of micro-organisms. The key study was performed with the substance as registered (quatenary ammonium compounds, C12 -18 -alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chloride) according to OECD TG 209 using activated sludge, and in compliance with the OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice (reliability 1).

The toxicity of quatenary ammonium compounds, C12 -18 -alkylbis(hydroxyethyl)methyl, chloride to activated sludge was determined by measuring the inhibition of the respiration at a contact time of 3 hours. The EC50 is 29 mg/L with 95% confidence limits of 15 and 56 mg/L. The corresponding EC10 is 11 mg/L. Based on active substance the EC50 = 28.8 mg/L with 95% confidence limits of 14.9 and 55.7 mg/L. The EC10 is 10.9 mg a.s./L
