According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, section 9.1.5., column 2, long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms. Phosphoric acid, potassium salt (2:3), dihydrate is a simple, highly soluble inorganic salt that dissociates immediately in aquatic solutions. The main products of the dissociation of this substance are PO4-3and K+ions. Both potassium and phosphate are essential elements and therefore, they are not expected to cause adverse effects, as aquatic organisms possess internal mechanisms in order to regulate them. Furthermore, the results from the acute toxicity tests conducted at three different trophic levels (fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae) show neither lethal nor sub-lethal effects of phosphoric acid, potassium salt (2:3), dehydrate on these organisms up to a concentration of 100 mg/L. Based on this information and considering animal welfare, long-term toxicity testing on aquatic invertebrates is not deemed necessary.
