Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
31-10-2017 - 28-11-2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
(ECI 440/2008)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Moisture Content Determination

Test purpose To determine the moisture content (as weight loss) of a sample by drying at atmospheric pressure
Apparatus Owing to the relatively low melting point the material was placed into a desiccator with desiccant at ambient temperature for approximately 19 hours.
Preparation Sample tested hand milled

Result Moisture content 0.36 % by weight (average of 2 runs)
Key result
Test procedure:
other: Preliminary Screening Test
Moisture (wt %):
0.36
Remarks on result:
other: The sample melted on contact with the ignition source and ignited with a medium size flame, but no propagation was observed
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The sample melted on contact with the ignition source and ignited with a medium size flame, but no propagation was observed.
Executive summary:

The test is conducted in accordance with the procedure described in Regulation (EC) 440/2008, Annex Part A Test A10. The test was not conducted according to GLP.

The sample melted on contact with the ignition source and ignited with a medium size flame, but no propagation was observed. Therefore the substance is classified as not highly flammable.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C

Description of key information

not flammable on ignition

not pyrophoric

not flammable in contact with water

not self-heating

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

In a test according to EU Method A.10 the substance melted on contact with the ignition source and ignited, but no propagation was observed.

Based on experience in handling and use and the chemical structure pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not to be expected. The substance is completely molten at 160 °C and therefore does not need to be considered for classification as self-heating.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: In a test according to EU method A.10 the substance melted on contact with the ignition source and ignited, but no propagation was observed. Based on chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected. The substance is completely molten at 160 °C, therefore the substance does not need to be considered for classification as self-heating substance.
