Description of key information

Sediment toxicity testing of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) was waived. According to Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006, Annexes IX and X, Column 2, these studies need not be conducted unless the Chemical Safety Assessment indicates the need to investigate further the degradation of the substance or its degradation products. According to Annex I, if the risk characterisation ratio in the chemical safety assessment is below 1.0, the risks are considered controlled. In the chemical safety assessment of this substance, the risk characterization ratio is below 1. The calculated PNECs for sediment organisms were derived on the basis of equilibrium partitioning, and are in the same range or higher as for freshwater organisms, and so toxicity testing of sediment organisms is not specifically indicated. Therefore, the criteria are met and there is no need to require additional testing in this area.
