Description of key information

Toxicity testing of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) to soil micro-organisms was waived. In accordance with Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006, Annex X, Column 2, studies on the effects of the substance upon terrestrial microorganisms need not be conducted if direct and indirect exposure to the soil compartment is unlikely. Direct releases of 4VP to soil were not predicted in the exposure scenarios. Deposition of 4VP in soils from atmospheric deposition is expected to be limited, considering the short half-life of 4VP in air due to reaction with atmospheric free radicals (i.e., hydroxyl, nitrate and ozone radicals). Any 4VP that is released to soils is unlikely to be distributed to the soil compartment. The log Koc for 4VP is 2.3414; this value falls within the range of log Koc values (1.5 to 2.5) which indicate that the compound does not have the potential to sorb strongly onto sediment or soil. Therefore, direct or indirect exposure of soil to 4VP in soils is unlikely.
