key study
Study period:
04 Aug 2014 to 05 Aug 2014

Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
modifications for the use of different substrates
Principles of method if other than guideline:
In the standard test, the substance is formed into an unbroken train of material, approximately 250 mm long, on a non-combustible, non-porous, low heat-conducting base plate. Tests are carried out to investigate the burning characteristics of the sample using an air-rich Bunsen burner flame as the ignition source.
A preliminary screening test is conducted to determine whether or not the sample ignites and propagates combustion over 200 mm within 4 minutes, either by burning with a flame or by smouldering.
A positive result in the preliminary screening test instigates a full series of burning tests, to establish whether or not the test substance propagates combustion over 100 mm in under 45 s, after an initial burning distance of 80 mm. These tests are carried out until a positive result is obtained, or for a total of six times.

Modifications:
For this particular study, the tests were carried out as prescribed using a standard glass base-plate, but were also repeated using the following substrates:
• a cement-based material reinforced with selected fibres.
• fibreboard – composed of man-made vitreous silicate fibres.

These substrates are non-combustible but differ in their surface characteristics; Sindanyo is relatively smooth, although rougher than glass, whereas the fibreboard is fibrous in nature and consequently, unlike the others, slightly porous.
All the substrates have low thermal conductivities (Sindanyo and fibreboard are commonly used for thermal insulation purposes), with typical values of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.1 W/mK for glass, Sindanyo and fibreboard respectively.

The test substance melted and ignited, burning fully with flame over 100 mm with the following times:

Test Number:

Testing was suspended after test number 3, having attained a positive result (i.e. < 45 s).

RESULTS

The test substance did not propagate combustion when tested in accordance with the standard EC Test A.10 method using a glass base-plate. From extended testing using a fibreboard base-plate, the test substance propagated combustion over 100 mm in a time of 40 seconds. The enhancement of the burning characteristics is believed to be due to the decomposition of the test substance, the conditions for which are dependent on the physical properties of the substrate. The test substance should be classified as highly flammable in terms of its burning characteristics.

Interpretation of results:
Category 1 (flammable solids) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
From extended testing using a fibreboard base-plate, the test substance propagated combustion over 100 mm in a time of 40 seconds.
Executive summary:

The flamability of the test item has been determined using a modified test with a non-combustible fibreboard base-plate in accordance with EU Method A.10 and in compliance with GLP. It was concluded that the test substance propagated combustion over 100 mm in 40 seconds.
