General Information

Name:
Self-classification of methylthiouracil
Implementation:
EU
Type of classification:
self-classification
Remarks:

Methylthiouracil is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This is based on the studies where methylthiouracil has produced tumours in three species of laboratory rodents after oral administration. In two studies in mice, multiple studies in rats and one study in hamsters, methylthiouracil produced thyroid follicular-cell adenomas and/or carcinomas after oral administration.

No studies of cancer in humans are available specifically on methylthiouracil.
