Melting point / freezing point
Administrative data
Link to relevant study record(s)
- Endpoint:
- melting point/freezing point
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 22-25 February 2010
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: The study was not carried out using GLP. The results were carried out once on one sample, and the results were as expected.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: ISO 11357-2
- Deviations:
- no
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- A small sample of the epoxy resin was placed in a small capsule. The temperature of the sample was scanned versus an empty capsule. The difference in the heat required to increase the temperature of a sample and reference was measured as function of temperature was used to determine the glass transition temperature of the resin.
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Type of method:
- thermal analysis
- Melting / freezing pt.:
- ca. -16 °C
- Remarks on result:
- other: The measurement was carried out on this substance using thermal analysis - a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The melting point is a glass transition temperature (Tg).
- Conclusions:
- The glass transition temperature (Tg) of EPIKOTE 828-LVEL was measured by differential scanning calorimetry and found to be -16°C.
- Executive summary:
A typical product EPIKOTE(TM) 828 -LVEL described using EC number 500 -033 -5 is not a pure substance and therefore does not have a freezing point. Thermal analysis was carried out on this typical product and the glass transition temperature was found to be -16°C.

Description of key information
The substance 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol, oligomeric reaction products with 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane (EC No. 500-033-5) has a variable molecular weight range. The majority of the substance is a viscous liquid with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of ca. -16°C.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
- -16 °C
Additional information
The substance 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol, oligomeric reaction products with 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane (EC No. 500-033-5) has a variable molecular weight range. The majority of the substance is a viscous liquid with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of ca. -16°C. During storage crystallization of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A often occurs. Bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether melts at a temperature between 30 and 50°C.
