Abiotic degradation

DBT(2EHMA) is stable to hydrolysis at pH 4-9.

Biotic degradation

DBT(2EHMA) undergoes 35.3% biodegradation after 28 days classifying the compound as 'not readily biodegradable'. When the study was increased to 74 days biodegradation increased to 56%. This biodegradation will be primarily due to biodegradation of the 2-EHMA ligands. DBT(2-EHMA) dissociates rapidly in water to form the alkyltin DBT and rapidly converts to form DBTO, dibutyltin hydroxide, or dibutyltin carbonate. The alkyltin moiety (DBT) is expected to be more stable.
