Description of key information

No true melting point is observed for sodium hypophosphite. The substance decomposes at temperatures above 238°C and an apparent melting point due to water evaporation, is observed at 90°C. (OECD guideline 102)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

An experimental study, which was performed according to OECD guideline 102 under ISO 17025, was selected as the key study (Reuse, 2009). Furthermore a complementary study was performed with TG-MS to identify the loss of elements during the heating. The thermograms thus obtained showed that in the test conditions, no true melting point was observed for this substance. Moreover the substance decomposed at temperatures above 238°C and an apparent melting point due to water evaporation was observed at 90°C.

This study is reliable without restrictions since it is a guideline study performed by an ISO 17025 certified laboratory.
