From the database of chronic cobalt toxicity to higher plants, there are 83 individual high quality NOEC(L)/EC10 values for various endpoints (shoot yield, shoot length, root yield, root length) for 7 different species exposed to a variety of natural soils from Europe and North America and laboratory-derived artificial soils. When expressed as total soil Co, these range from 3.2 mg Co/kg dw for Medicago sativa (Kapustka and Eskew, 2000) to 647 mg Co/kg dw for Hordeum vulgare (Li et al, 2007). Below are the accepted high quality studies for terrestrial plants used for derivation of the HC5 and terrestrial PNEC.
