Administrative data
First-aid measures
General advice:
Adhere to personal protection measures when giving first aid. Remove immediately contaminated, soaked clothing including shoes and dispose of safely. Take affected person to fresh air. Keep warm, calm, covered up. Call a physician immediately. Show the safety data sheet or label to the doctor in attendance. Alcohol increases the toxic effects.
Inhalation:
Remove the casualty to fresh air and keep warm and at rest. If breathing problems or indisposition persists, consult a physician.
In breathing stops, apply immediately artificial respiration and cardiac massage. During resuscitation, care must be taken to avoid contamination by the substance from the patient. Immediately call an emergency physician and hospitalise. Administer oxygen if necessary.
Skin contact:
Wash immediately with plenty of water. In case of skin irritation or allergic reaction, consult a physi-cian. If significant contact: Hospitalise immediately and keep under medical surveillance.
Eye contact:
Wash immediately with plenty of water. If irritation persists, consult an eye doctor.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water (only if the person is conscious). Do not drink alco-holic beverage, as alcohol increases the toxic effects. Immediately call an emergency physician and hospitalise.
Protection of first-aiders:
Wear personal protective equipment as required.
Notes to physician:
Symptoms
Headache, Nausea, Dizziness, Intoxication, Unconsciousness.
Treatment:
Do not administer catecholamines because of the cardiac effect caused by the product. Alcohol in-creases the toxic effects.
If product was swallowed, flush stomach as quickly as possible. Avoid aspiration, f necessary intuba-tion.
If product was involved in fire, phosgene may have been formed. Inhalation of phosgene can lead to toxic pulmonary oedema formation after several hours. Hospitalise victim and keep under surveil-lance!
Fire-fighting measures
Extinguishing media:
The product is not flammable. Adapt firefighting measures to surrounding fire/area. If product is involved in fire: defeat developing combustion gases with water spray. Collect contami-nated firefighting water separately; do not allow entering into drains or surface waters. Dispose of in accordance with local regulations.
Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:
Toxic and corrosive combustion products: hydrogen chloride, phosgene, carbon monoxide, other chlorinated substances.
Precautions for fire-fighters:
Stay upwind from fire fumes. Wear full protective suit with self-contained breathing apparatus.
Special protective actions for fire-fighters:
Remove fire endangered containers if possible. Fire endangered tanks should be cooled with water spray. Collect contaminated fire extinguishing water separately; do not allow entering into drains or surface waters. Fire residues and contaminated fire extinguishing water must be disposed of in ac-cordance with local regulations.

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:
Avoid contact with skin and eyes and inhalation of vapours. Use personal protective equipment as required. Evacuate non-essential staff and those not equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment upwind from leaking substance. Call the emergency brigade. If safely possible, close leak-ing valves and collect leaking product in suited containers.
Environmental precautions:
Do not let product enter drains or natural waters, soil or evaporate into the air. If possible, collect leaking product in suited containers. Dam up spillage with earth and soak up with inert absorbents (diatomaceous earth, vermiculite, universal absorbent, etc.). Collect all contaminated materials in suit-ed containers with tight closures.
Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up:
Collect leaking product in suited containers with tight closures. Pump residual tank content into a emergency tank.
Soak up small spillage with inert absorbent material (Vermiculite, diatomaceous earth, universal ab-sorbent); do not use earth, sand or saw dust. Collect soaked absorbent and contaminated soil in suited containers with tight closures. Dispose of as hazardous waste according to national regula-tions.
After cleaning: ventilate concerned area well.

Precautions for safe handling:
Avoid open handling. Whenever possible, keep the substance in closed systems and apply closed loop re-filling with vapour return lines and dry-break couplings. Use only at well-ventilated places (e.g. in a fume hood) or with extract ventilation at points where emissions occur. Avoid inhalation of va-pours and skin contact with the liquid. Wear suitable personal protective equipment if exposure is likely. Limit the quantity of product in the work area for the work in hand. Do not use the substance in the vicinity of fire, hot/glowing objects or welding & cutting operations.
Technical measures/Precautions:
Use whenever possible in closed systems. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at points where emissions may occur. Use only on protected ground. Drain substance from equipment and flush with suited cleaning liquids or gas prior to break or maintenance.
Provide showers and eye-baths nearby (un)loading stations for emergency intervention.
Hygiene measures:
Do not eat, drink or smoke when using chemicals. Apply suited skin protection before staring work. Wash hands after handling of chemicals. Remove dirty work clothing and protective equipment when exiting work area.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:
Keep container tightly closed in a dry, cool and ventilated place. Prevent uptake of moisture, prefera-bly store under nitrogen blanketing. Protect from impact of fire and heating. Store in double-walled containers or in bunded tanks with floors being impermeable for chlorinated solvents.
Suited materials: carbon steel, stainless steel, steel enamelled or coated with zinc silicate or other resistant coatings (always ask the manufacturer of the coating material for compatibility with the sub-stance).
Unsuited materials: aluminium and magnesium and their alloys, zinc, plastics unless approved by the material supplier.

Not recommended: phosphatised steel, aluminium and magnesium and their alloys, zinc, plastics unless approved by the material supplier.

General protective measures:
Ensure sufficient air exchange and/or exhaust in work areas. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at points where emissions may occur. Monitor the working atmosphere on exposure levels.
Personal protective equipment:
Respiratory protection:
- At low concentration and short term activity (max 15 min): power assisted full mask, half- or full-face masks with filter A, AX or ABEK, or fresh air supplied helmets certified for gases/vapours, or self-contained breathing apparatus (independent air supply).
- At high or unknown concentration or prolonged activity: self-contained breathing apparatus (inde-pendent air supply)
RPE has to compliant to EN 133.
Hand protection:
If skin contact is likely, use chemicals protecting gloves compliant to EN 374.
- Short term activity (max 15 min):
suited materials: butyl rubber or chloroprene or PVC, thickness: 0.5 mm or better (breakthrough time > 10 min). EVA laminate (breakthrough time > 30 min).
- Prolonged activity:
suited materials: fluorinated rubber or PVA, thickness: 0.5 mm or better (breakthrough time > 480 min). nitrile rubber, thickness: 0.5 mm or better (breakthrough time > 240 min)
Eye/face protection:
Safety glasses or goggles compliant to EN 166.
Skin and body protection:
Impervious protective suit or apron, chemicals resistant protective shoes or boots.
Stability and reactivity
Reactivity & Chemical stability:
The product is stable under normal handling and storage conditions.
Product decomposes slowly with oxygen or moisture (formation of: hydrogen chloride, phosgene). Sun light / UV radiation accelerates the decomposition.
Conditions to avoid: Contact with hot/glowing objects or flames. Exposure to sun light / UV radiation in the presence of moisture or oxygen (air).
Incompatible materials to avoid:
Strong bases and alkali.
Strong oxidising agents (e.g. CrO3, conc. HNO3, N2O5, KMnO4, ozone),.
Powder of aluminium, magnesium, zinc, titanium etc., alkali and alkaline earth metals, sodium azide (all: vigorous reaction or explosion, shock sensitive mixtures).
Thermal decomposition:
Starting at 250 °C. Depends strongly on the material of the containment and duration of the heat stress.
Hazardous decomposition products:
At high temperature: chlorine, perchloroethylene, hexachloroethane and other chlorinated compounds. In the presence of water and/or oxygen: hydrogen chloride, phosgene.
Disposal considerations
Product Disposal:
If recycling is not feasible, dispose as hazardous waste in accordance with waste regulations or plant permit.
Packaging disposal:
Dispose contaminated packaging as hazardous waste in accordance with waste regulations.
Fully cleaned packaging without remnant product may be re-used or disposed as simple waste in accordance with waste regulations.
