The experimental partition coefficient log Pow of L-alanine is -2.74. The experimental value was selected as the key value. From five known literatur studies the recommended value in Sangster databank was given to log P -2.85.

The partition coeffcient of L-alanine was also calculated with 2 different (Q)SAR methods:

1) using the software program KOWWIN which is a part of the software package EPIWIN 4.0 Suite, Version 4.0, where is developed and maintained by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency copyright © 2000. The calculated value was Log Kow = -2.1458. The suitability of the model was assessed and it was concluded that L-alanine is considered to be inside the applicability domain of the EpiSuite KOWWIN model.

2) using the software ACD/LogD Suite, Version 12.0 where developed and maintained by Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc. in 2008. The calculated LogP for zwitterionic form was -3.07 ± 1.00
