Short term effects on aquatic invertebrates ranged from 45 to 1376 mg B/L. Equivalent concentrations of sodium pentaborate would be:
Anhydrous: 171 to 5220 mg/L,
Pentahydrate: 246 to 7511 mg/L.
Short term effects on the algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly Selenastrum capricorntum) were observed at 40 mg B/L. Equivalent concentrations of sodium pentaborate would be:
Anhydrous: 152 mg/L,
Pentahydrate: 218 mg/L.
These data support a conclusion that borates should not be classified as dangerous for the environment.
