Additional information

Freshwater aquatic toxicity data were available for three tropic levels: fish, invertebrates and algae. No adverse effects were observed in any of the available acute tests with LC50 > 100 (fish), > 1000 and > 1000 mg/L respectively. In a long term reproductive toxicity test with aquatic invertebrates, the NOEL was found to be > 100 mg/L. A long-term study in fish is proposed. MMB is readily biodegradable and has a low log Kow (0.18). Therefore, a long term exposure of aquatic organisms or a bioaccumulation of MMB is not expected. In an activated sludge respiration inhibition test with MMB, the substance had no effects on the activated sludge at a limit test concentration of 1000 mg/L. It is considered that the respiration inhibition of MMB is neglible because an EC50 > 1000 mg/L of the substance was determined in this test.
