Since the tetrahydrofuran - boron trifluoride complex rapidly decomposes in water, the biodegradability of the decomposition products tetrahydrofuran and boron trifluoride dihydrate is examined. The biodegradability of tetrahydrofuran was tested following the OECD test guideline 301 D. Since only 39 % tetrahydrofuran was degradade during the 28 hour exposure period, the criteria for ready bioavailability were not fulfilled (van Ginkel, 1992). However after prolonged exposure, tetrahydrofuran was found to be inherently biodegradable. Inherent biodegradability was additionally confirmed by the supporting studies (BASF AG, 1991; BASF AG 1992; JETOC, 2002).
Boron trifluoride dihydrate is inorganic and is therefore not subject to biodegradation.
