Additional information

No data on aquatic toxicity of potassium 2-methylbutan-2-olate is available. However, potassium 2-methylbutan-2-olate hydrolyses rapidly into potassium hydroxide (CAS No. 1310-58-3) and 2-methylbutan-2-olate (CAS No. 75-85-4) in the presence of water. Therefore, the ecotoxicity is mediated by the two hydrolysis products. The hydrolysis products potassium hydroxide and 2-methylbutan-2-olate showed no harmful effects on aquatic organisms (according to the published dossiers on the dissemination homepage of ECHA)and both are not classified for environmental hazard.

Due to the hydrolysis of the test substance and a low adsorption potential of the hydrolysis products, soil is not considered to represent a target compartment. Additionally, due to the use of the test substance as an intermediate, exposure to the environment is expected to be unlikely.

Conclusion on classification

The classification of the environmental hazard according to CLP Regulation No. 1272/2008 is based on the hydrolysis products. Both products, potassium hydroxide (CAS No. 1310-58-3) and 2-methylbutan-2-olate (CAS No. 75-85-4), showed no harmful effects on aquatic organisms (according to the published dossiers on the dissemination homepage of ECHA) and both are not classified for environmental hazards. Therefore, a classification of the test substance for environmental hazard is not warranted.
