The DOWFAX 2A1 substance has very low vapor pressure and is miscible in water, thereby indicating essentially no potential for volatilization from water or soil to the atmosphere. The estimate half-life for reaction of the substance components with hydroxyl radical in the atmoshpere, in the unlikely event that atmospheric emissions should occur, ranges from 12 to 18 hrs. The substance has a very low estimated log Pow of -2.68, which indicates very low potential for adsorption to soils, sediments, and sewage biosolids. However, due to the surface-active properties of the substance, a higher potential for adsorption to particles can be expected, based on measured log Koc values of 4.5 to 4.8 for structurally-analogous but more hydrophobic DOWFAX 8390. The substance will tend to remain in water if emitted to water, where biodegradation is expected to be the dominant process affecting fate and lifetime of the substance. Screening tests indicate the substance to exhibit inherent (primary) biodegradability, and half-lives for primary biodegradation in water, soil, and sediment are expected to be < 40 days. Based on simulation tests in surface waters, sediments, and soils using the structurally-related DOWFAX 8390, the substance is expected to be slowly but ultimately biodegraded to CO2 and water in these environments. Half-lives for ultimate biodegradation in these matrices could be expected to exceed 180 days. The DOWFAX 2A1 substance is expected to have low potential for accumulation in aquatic organisms, based on the very low log Pow = -2.68, and measured BCF values in fish and daphnids for the structurally analogous C12 -14 LAS.
